Today, I’d like to show you the Koushouji-temple, a temple of Jodo Shinshu of Buddhism, which is the home of my friend Mr.Wakabayashi. The Buddhists of here regularly give sermons to the followers, and this is not a tourist spot.
There’s a statue of Amida Buddha in the center of the hall of the temple, and this is the most respected Buddha in the Jodo Shinshu. He didn’t exist as a man in real life. Mr.Wakabayashi explained to me that he is unvisible just like you can not see the gravity, but he is always there to protect you. It is said that Gautama Buddha has come to the real world to let us know the “salvation” of Amida Buddha.
On the right hand of the hall is the image of Shinran, who has started Jodo Shinshu. It had been believed among the Buddhists in Japan that the only Buddhists who have practiced asceticism can get the salvation, in the 12th-13th century in which Shinran lived. But Shinran couldn’t throw away his desires even though he practiced asceticism. One day he came to know that the Buddhist Honen found in the scripture which said that you could get the salvation by praying to Amidabutsu, even if you couldn’t practice asceticism. He did just as Honen said, and he has spread this idea to the public. This is why Jodo Shinshu has the largest number of followers in Japan today.
